I would like to draw to people's attention (if you're not already aware of it) of the proposal for a new 'village' of 400 houses, school, etc South of Whiterock in a highly visible position in the Dart Valley Area of Special Conservation and on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This would adversely impact, with artificial lighting etc. on the tranquillity and beauty of this estuarine landscape, is surplus to demand and outside Torbay's Local Plan. Pure financial opportunism. If you object to this please express your views - always citing the Planning Application no. P/2017/1133 - by email to: planning@torbay.gov.uk or by letter, for the attention of case officer Carly Perkins, to: Torbay Council, Planning Service, Electric House, Castle Circus, Torquay, TQ1 3DR But you have only until Wednesday, December 6th to express your views on this. The key point to make is that it has been listed by the Council as a proposal that is a 'departure from the adopted Torbay Local Plan and there is nothing in the application that has been presented as a material planning consideration that would justify departing from the adopted Local Plan." This site was deliberately rejected as a development site by the Brixham Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan. Members of Torbay Council are recommending that the Plans should not be renewed, and will be holding a meeting to discuss this the following day at the Rosetor Room, Riviera Centre, Torquay at 5.30pm. If you are able to express your support for the plans by simply attending this meeting, your presence would count.

Someone in the last 6 days has got into our orchard in The Lane and stolen all the plums (and there were quite a lot). These were to be picked yesterday and sold to raise money for the Chernobyl Childrens Life Line to buy tools to enable the building of a Respite Centre in Belarus. This beggars belief !!

Hello, I work for a charity and have swimmers taking part in the Dart 10k this weekend. Due to last minute drop outs we urgently need volunteers to help on Sunday 4th September. Start time is around 0700 and finishing 1300-1500 depending on where you will based (either the start at Totnes or finish, Dittisham). It is an amazing event as I'm sure you all know and any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

School Farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is now open to new members. School Farm CSA is a unique organic market garden run by four women growers on the Dartington Estate. For the past two years we have been supplying our local community with fresh, organic, local produce and this year we will be doubling our food production, meaning we can open our gates to new members. CSA members get an array of seasonal, freshly picked produce, whilst supporting ecological farming practices and local livelihoods. A share of the produce contains a range of freshly harvested vegetables and some fruit (roughly 5-10 items per week). A share is designed to feed a household of two adults per week, or a larger family that don’t cook every day. Members also receive a monthly CSA newsletter with recipes and farm updates, and are invited to attend events, volunteer days and courses at the farm. We aim to supply a weekly box of vegetables from June through to January, weather permitting. You can pick up your vegetables in Totnes, Bridgetown or on the Dartington Hall Estate. Cost of a share for the full 2015/2016 season is £500, with monthly payment plans and subsidised shares available. For more information please email Jenny members@schoolfarmcsa.org.uk or visit our website www.schoolfarmcsa.org.uk

I have recently been appointed Service Manager for the Royal Voluntary Service (formerly WRVS) to work with Devon Libraries, providing the Home Library Service for people who can no longer get to the library. Our marvellous teams of volunteers are based in libraries all over Devon and they choose books, CD’s and “talking books” (for the visually impaired) and deliver them out to people who are no longer able to get to the library themselves. It is very rewarding and is a great way to make friends, not only with the other volunteers, but also with the folk receiving the service. For the volunteers, just a couple of hours every two or three weeks can make such a difference to a housebound person. Our volunteers need to be keen readers, friendly and outgoing, and able to drive. RVS will pay travel and parking expenses connected with the role. In a thriving town like Dartmouth and the surrounding villages there must be not only a large potential resource of volunteers, but also people who would really enjoy receiving the service. We already have one brilliant volunteer in Dartmouth and it would be great to find some enthusiastic volunteers to help her expand the service, so I would be equally pleased to hear from them. If you are either a potential service user, or a potential volunteer, I would love to hear from you to tell you more about the Home Library Service. My contact details are: 07786 635163 and email is carole.poulton@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk

My wife's grandmother worked for some years as housekeeper to James Hellyer, until he died in 1912. James Hellyer was a notable person in Dittisham from his arrival in about 1861 as a school master. He subsequently became church organist, churchwarden and Parish Clerk. Do you have any further information on this eminent gentleman? Thank you. Keith Smith
